Catch mitosis in a root tip — name the stage, then measure how fast cells divide.
The onion root tip is where new cells are born, so it is packed with dividing cells frozen at every stage. Scan the field, identify prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase, and count them against the resting cells to work out the mitotic index — the fraction of a tissue that is actively dividing.
